Injected

Author: Michael

Injected into a different culture I will immerse myself in volunteer opportunities focusing on, but not limited to, environmental sustainability, new social practices, new culinary opportunities, and of course much wine and coffee.

I am set to depart exactly 2 weeks from today. I fly into Quito and will be volunteering with Planet Drum, a San Francisco-based organization with an environmental focus. Specifically I will be participating in their efforts in Bahia de Caraquez on the Pacific Coast, an Eco-city.

Naturally immunizations were required and I had the joy of having these done just over a week ago. I don’t respond so brilliantly to needles so I ordered the nurse to lay me down and grab me an apple juice. Shots went well despite some loopy results and a lingering headache – to be expected. I ended up only needing two vaccines in needle form: Hepatitis A and Yellow Fever. The rest of the meds required are prescription form and include a diarrhea prevention drug (wonderful), the Typhoid vaccine, and Malaria pills.

Now the onset of the remainder of my preparations, starting to pack (going minimalist with the BIT – buy it there – approach) and finalizing some plans along the way. Stay tuned!
