Canoa
Author: MichaelTold myself I´d skip Canoa this weekend because it gets so crazy over Carnival. That didn´t stick, so yesterday I went with some kids we met in town from Quito (one kid had learned English studying for a year in Liverpool…most unique accent I´ve ever heard – British + Ecuadorian) and some of the Planet Drum volunteers to Canoa. Awesome, awesome surf town. Speakers the size of Smart cars lined the beach and pumped out raggaeton. Men tri-cycled around the beach selling 24oz beers. People rode up and down the beach on horses. It was quite nice. And my server made a smiley face out of mustard on my rice. Don´t prefer mustard on my rice, but how could I be mad.

As we walked to the far north end of the beach, we climbed over some rocks around a corner for a good 5 minutes and discovered this completely empty cove:

We relaxed here for an hour or so and swam some. Then went back to join the party till sunset.
Daniel was starving and opted for a hot dog from a street vender.
Amazingly, turning around from the crowded noisy beach resulted in a quiet scenic view with a horse tied up and green hills in the background:

The city is charming and tiny, with dirt roads and a small population, yet the swells are so large it draws a lot of tourists for surfing. So glad I decided to head up the coast to this town. Without a doubt my favorite spot in Ecuador thus far, and not just because of the minty rum drinks and shaving cream fights.
